NEIGHBOURS
# In truth, my life revolves around!watching "Neighbours", because in%truth i t is the best Australian soap"opera that there is. Home and Away doesn't come anywhere near it in#quality, and none of the British or!American soaps quite hit the mark"either (Though I am a bit prone to!the odd episode of Brookside ) At"twenty-five to six, every weekday,%life stops in my household, as we all$plonk ourselves down in front of the
telly to watch this gem of a%television programme. I even watch it$twice a day, when I am not elsewhere
during the week at lunchtime. I$think that what really appeals about#Neighbours is the way that it is so!predictable. You can tell exactly
what is going to happen in each$episode, which makes you feel clever"when you do actually get it right.$Neighbours is also excellent because of the appalling characters that$there are in it, each with their own%little mannerisms. You can spend your%life talking about Gaby's magnificent%"Huh"s, (Which the Teletext subtitles!refer to as 'forced laughte r') -!Just watch, and see how often she%does it. (Whenever she disagrees with"someone, which seems to be all the
time !) Wayne is also another%character with interesting qualities.$(And he looks like me !!) That nasal"tone he uses when speaking is just$magnificent. I wonder, does he speak
like that in real life ? Wayne,$although he was convicted of murder,"is a complete saint. He spends all%his waking hours giving extra tuition%to some of his pupils, helping Phoebe#and Steven, and in general, being a thoroughly good egg. My hero (or%rather, heroine) would be Analise. As%well as being a babe, it was her, and
Wayne who managed to get Helen"Daniels to go on holiday and leave the programme for quite a while,$because of her alcohol problem. This"act de serves a medal, as Helen is
the most interfering, annoying,
scrawny, feeble old bitch!I have ever had the misfortune to see. (I sincerely hope that Anne Haddy, the actress who plays her$isn't as bad) I just hope Helen pops her clogs soon. Philip Martin is another, dare I say, interesting#character. He is amazing in the way"that he stays uncommonly calm when$faced with any crisis. He is just so
cool, calm and collective, and
although he calls Hannah, his daughter, "Button" every now and%then, this can be forgiven because of his (usual) great taste in women$(Phwough, Beth eh.... fnar) I am not
sure why he puts up with Julie$though. Neighbours was even better a#few years ago. Bronwyn (who married
Henry Ramsay) was the most%babelishous person ever to be on that#programme, and it is a shame she is#no longer on the programme. Nothing
can compare to her, though the#gorgeousness of Harold Bishop comes!pretty close. Those double chins,"that lovely smile, his great choir practice hobbies. He was a great
bloke. ! Toby Mangel was another star. I
remember a great episode of
Neighbours a few years back, in$which Toby had to kiss Katie Landers#(Todd's little sister) in rehursals$for a school play based on 'Sleeping
Beauty'. That was a classic . I!regularly meet one of the current"Neighbours stars, Terence Donovan,
who plays Doug Willis. Every#weekday, he cycles past me, while I%am on the way to school. I have asked%him for his autograph, but he said he"was in a rush to get to rehursals, and couldn't stop. Never mind, I
